O3b satellites were launched

O3b Networks, the world’s first fiber-speed, satellite network launched its first four satellites into orbit from Kourou, French Guiana.

O3b Networks is a Global Satellite Services Provider that is deploying a next-generation satellite network that combines the reach of satellite with the speed of fiber, providing  low‐cost, high‐speed, low latency Internet and mobile connectivity.  O3b Networks’ investors include SES, Google, Liberty Global, HSBC Principal Investments, Northbridge Venture Partners, Allen & Company, Development Bank of Southern Africa, Sofina, Satya Capital and Luxempart. O3b Networks is headquartered in St. Helier, Jersey, Channel Islands.

Company founder, Greg Wyler, first got the idea in 2005, while trying to provide a nationwide telephone service in rural Rwanda. At the time, Rwanda, like many emerging and developing countries around the world had limited terrestrial and international connectivity. In 2007, he and a small group of investors including Google, Liberty Global and HSBC started O3b Networks.

The optimal coverage of the O3b Networks  is between 45° of latitude north and south of the equator. The coverage area includes markets in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific, with a collective population of over 3 billion people.

O3b’s satellites will be placed in orbit 8062 kilometres from the earth. See the launching here: http://www.o3bnetworks.com/
